I think the usage of the term tells you something about the managers that use(d) it: For them it was really like an infection. Their developers came in contact with that free software and all of a sudden their big enterprise corp had legal obligations. It must have come as a real surprise that enforceable licenses are not a one-way road from enterprises to consumers.
