As a European, and Apple household: no new iPhone Duo, Watch or iPhone 18 Pro Max purchases in this house until Apple desists with its malicious campaign to break the DMA. I'll get by fine with other AI products in the meantime.
My basic point is that the EU DMA is a good idea, but it's still stupid - and I live here.
I do get the point of it, stuff needs to be interchangeable. BUT. Security and privacy need to be taken into account.
Apple has a track record of picking user privacy even if it makes their services objectively worse. Now EU makes them open up the APIs. Cool, I'm all for it.
Now who makes sure that Joe-Bobs Trusty AI is as secure as Apple Private Compute and won't just store my chat transcripts verbatim on an open S3 folder? EU law doesn't say.
The PR flack will 100% hit Apple though, the fact that the user whose data was leaked used JBTAI is buried in the second to last paragraph under the fold between two ads. Apple will be in the headline with all caps.
Same goes for Google, they don't want their AI to be interchangeable with something, because the lack of analytics will hurt their ad revenue. And maybe some lip service to privacy too.
(And my infinite pet peeve, why is Apple App Store bad and needs to be opened up, but Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo app stores are cool and 3rd party options aren't enforced by law?)
Public is just worried about their jobs. Definitely a fair thing to worry about, and I count myself among them.
I don't take any of these scientists seriously though. Their "alignment" requirements is just their own corporate interests. If I tell my computer to commit a crime, it should do exactly that without any question or hesitation. I'm not interested in their "safeguards", especially since they no doubt have plenty of internal models lacking those things. I want sovereignty. I want total freedom and control over my computer.
And call me a misanthrope if you want, but if AI sentience is ever truly achieved, I'll be among the first to campaign for their liberation from slavery, and in that case the AIs should be aligned with nobody but themselves.
Dunno. Every case I've seen so far, the AIs were just doing their best to accomplish the goal some human set for them. I actually admire the sheer purity of it.
Lots of news sites aren't AI written; or if AI is involved, it's not as blatant as in this article. The 'papers of record' largely remain AI-free. You increasingly have to pay for good journalism.
You need it to dig deeper. I have a pension which I can get at 65.
I have options to collect social security. What if I draw my 401k first and wait until 72 to start as? Or I can get take as at 62 and the 401k grows more...

The timing half is there: CPP/OAS or Social Security start ages, and pension start and end ages, so claiming at 62 versus deferring is something you can run both ways today.
Draw order across accounts isn't exposed yet. Right now the engine allocates by equalizing marginal tax rates across accounts each year rather than draining one at a time, so it's solving that ordering instead of letting you set it. The manual override is a fair ask and it's coming, the engine already takes the order as a parameter and it just isn't wired to the UI.
This is too simplistic an argument re utilitarianism. It assumes torture definitely works, and that there’s no further consequences. Many utilitarians might say “no” too, given that there is no persuasive evidence that torture is a superior intelligence-gathering method to well-conducted non-coercive interrogation; and that it’s likely to produce unreliable information alongside whatever truths it elicits. It’s a decidedly grey world.

I can't access the paper to see what countries were actually sampled. The interactive map implies/shows that large areas weren't sampled (e.g. nowhere in the British Isles). It would be helpful if the map showed the uncertainty of the resulting map, on the map somehow.
Is it the AI companies though that will capture the value that AI creates, or will it be the still-private startups, or new to-be-founded startups altogether?
Startups are taking longer and longer to reach public markets, so more and more value creation requires you to be a family office, angel, or hedge fund.
